ABOUT US

Established by Laura Robertson and Theodore Godfrey-Cass founders of Northern Yin and Yang  an unincorporated association of independent artists dedicated to creating affordable workspaces, exhibitions, and community engagement opportunities in South Shields, North East England.

We started out exhibiting at the historic Shields Market Place and later opened a small studio on Beach Road to connect with the local community. Now, in partnership with East Street Arts, we’ve been given the amazing opportunity to manage and transform this once-empty Wilko building into something that will bring new life to the High Street – The Market Gallery.

 
Our goal is to bring a new lease of life into the South Shields high street. Facilitating artists to work in a new environment, often away from their usual routines, to focus on their creative practice. We are offering a change of scenery and context, potentially inspiring new directions in an artist's work. Working with the local community through exhibitions, workshops, or other events.
